Rupert Bowers KC

Barrister & Kings Counsel

ABOUT

Rupert Bowers KC is a Consultant to Chess Law Solicitors and one of the country’s most highly regarded King’s Counsel, with a practice spanning some of the most complex areas of criminal, regulatory and public law.

As a consultant to the firm, Rupert is available to provide early strategic advice in appropriate cases, particularly where an investigation raises complex legal or evidential issues. His involvement enables the Chess Law Solicitors team, where necessary, to obtain the perspective of leading counsel at an early stage — when important decisions about strategy, evidence and the direction of a case are still being made.

A Leading King's Counsel

Rupert was called to the Bar in 1995 and appointed King’s Counsel in 2015. Unusually, his appointment to Silk recognised his work across both criminal and civil law, reflecting the breadth of a practice that frequently involves the intersection between criminal investigation, regulatory action and public law.

His expertise includes financial crime, asset freezing, private prosecutions, judicial review, extradition, espionage and terrorism, data protection and information rights, search warrants and the seizure of property and information, and proceedings before the Investigatory Powers Tribunal.

He is particularly well known for his expertise in challenging search warrants and the seizure of property and information, an area in which he has appeared in a significant number of reported cases.

Experience at the Highest Level

Rupert has acted in some of the most prominent and legally complex cases of recent years and is regularly instructed to represent high-profile individuals, high-net-worth clients and corporate organisations.

His former clients include Lord Hanningfield, Harry Redknapp, Jermain Defoe, Ben Thatcher, George Galloway and West Ham United F.C. He also represented Vincent Coggins in the first EncroChat case and Katrin Ivanova in proceedings concerning allegations of espionage for Russia.

At Chess Law Solicitors, Rupert’s role reflects our approach to serious criminal litigation: bring the right people into a case at the right time, and obtain specialist advice early where it can make the greatest difference.
